Louis Chand 12yrs old (Just turned 12)
By Wyn Belmont Auckland

Last year in the NZBSA Junior Snooker Champs Louis won the U13 and U17 age groups and received the most improved player of the tournament. Before the Barton Magill Open he was ranked 151 on the NZ ranking list. He played Oceania U21 and qualified to the last 8 players and was beaten by Kurt Brown.

At the Barton Magill played last weekend Louis surprised his section after believing he was going to get smashed by everyone in his section - they were Eldon Lai, Tony Van Wyk, Nick Garforth and Jacky Chu.
I spoke with him just before the tournament and told him he had to turn this negative into a positive as everyone in his section would have the same attitude (i.e. smash him in section play). Told him to turn this negative into a positive and that he had nothing to lose but experience to gain, play hard, don’t miss the easy ones and keep it tight. First game up was Tony Van Wyk - Louis beat him 2/0, Eldon beat Louis 2/0, Nick Garforth lost the first frame to Louis and on the third frame Nick required all the colours and the black. With black on the cushion behind black spot, he went for safety and fluked the black into the middle pocket. Jacky Chu lost the first frame to Louis but then won the next 2 frames. All in all not bad for a 12yr old junior snooker who thought he was going to get smashed - well done Louis.

Louis and 7 others from our club will rock up to the NZBSA U21s this weekend - Good luck all, 21 players in the event - good numbers.

Louis also participated in the Bay of Plenty Open Snooker tournament where he made several players take notice

NZ National U21s

Lee Paul came out on top by defeating lst years winner 3/2 (pink in the 5th frame) Ryan Knott last years winner

20 U21s competed a great turn out of players. Great for snooker. Dave Holmes from HB had a good turn out of boys as well. 3 girls from Glen Eden played although they did not qualify, a good experience for them.
Our team will be hopefully off to the World Snooker in Monteal, Canada this year.
