NZ Junior Snooker & Billiards Championships 2011

Venue: ACBS Clubrooms, Mt Albert Rd, Royal Oak, Auckland

Dates: 10th Oct – 14th Oct 2011

Report for the above Junior Champs as follows:

It was intended to hold these championships in Tauranga, however due to the RWC, and change of the School Holidays and personal family health problems this event was brought back to Auckland. Our numbers were down this year from last year, 37 down to 24 competitors 12 players from HB 11 players from Auckland and 1 player from North Otago. 21 males and 3 females competed.

Format- The tournament time for snooker was shortened to 4 ½ days, so the U13, U15 & U17 section play was completed on a 2 frame aggregate, the U19 & U21 was the best of 3 frames, post section the best of 3 frames, U21 was the best of 5 frames. This gave us enough time complete section play. Billiards – we had 12 players competing in this years Inaugural Junior Billiards competition which we completed 20min time limit one frame, there were 3 sections of 4 players plus the next best 2 thirds. Dress standards were adhered to ACBS standards.

Accommodation – We used the marae facilities at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori A Rohe O Mangere, and this proved to be adequate for the numbers that we had, some of the locals also moved onto the marae and this assisted with the inter action of the players. The three females that were competing were accommodated in West Auckland and this was done for safety reasons.

The cost for 5 nights for approx 20 people amounted to $750 plus key money of $70. Half of this cost was covered by HB group.

Transport – A 12 seater van was used by the HB Group, supervised by Dennis Lowe. Our 8 seater van was also used to help transport players.

Food – Lunches and dinners were provided and sponsored by the ACBS. HB provided funding for the breakfasts & odd bits we brought i.e. drinks, fruit, and ice cream. Thanks to ACBS and HB for their support.

Trophies – We forwarded a quote for the trophies at $1,939.11 but this was not sponsored by any organization this year, so maybe next year we can request that one of the associations submit an application on our behalf for the trophies for the 2012 event. NZBSA provided $300 towards the trophies which amounted to $263.40, the residual went towards prizes $36.60. We bought trophies for each division for the winner and runner up and the plate winner plus the Most Outstanding, Most Improved and Fair play Award.

Prizes – Every player recd a playing shirt (black) and a bow tie (3 colours to choose from). Every player recd a certificate as well, acknowledging their participation and result.

Refereeing and Rules – Cliff Hazeldon from the NZBSA Referees Association contributed 2 days to this event, he held 2 sessions with our juniors covering some basics skills and answering any questions they had regarding rules etc, All those that attended his session recd a Rule Book and an Etiquette Book. Some of the juniors have also been given the questionnaire for completing.

Thanks Cliff this was well worth it, and I am sure that the juniors appreciated your time and contribution. Thanks to Ron Slow and the NZBSA Referees Association.

Billiards & Coaching- John Keatley made himself available to coach any of the juniors that wanted help with their game. John also gave some Billiards coaching and booklets to some of the juniors – Basic Billiards by John Keatley. A CD was given to Dennis Lowe and if any of the juniors wanted a copy of this they could approach John or Dennis, John offered to email the program as well. Thanks John for your time coaching and for refereeing some of the billiards matches. I am sure the juniors enjoyed your input and found it well worthwhile. This event was an open grade event which meant anyone could enter and there was only the one tournament – Open Grade Junior Billiards.

Entertainment – Wednesday night the juniors at the marae went to the movies, paid for by Dennis Lowe. The girls attended the movies on Thursday night.

General – this year Junior Snooker champs has once again been a success and with the introduction of Junior Billiards, this made it more interesting for the juniors. Both games compliment each other and will help develop the all round skills of our young players of tomorrow. It is with pleasure that I am happy to say too all those that made this possible, thank you all. The ACBS have made a tremendous contribution providing meals, certificates, and stationary and having the tables prepared and ready for match play each day – thanks to Malcolm, Clive, Mandy, Barry, Dawn, Liz, Leslie and Ramona and the ACBS Committee.

Thanks to the Kura Kaupapa Marae in Mangere for giving us a reasonable and affordable form of accommodation. To our Hawkes Bay team of Dave Holmes and Dennis Lowe, another great effort from you guys and all the juniors from HB. Thanks to all those that attended to fundraising at Pockets Glen Eden. Thanks to the players from Titirangi RSA and to Healey White who made the effort to attend from North Otago – tremendous boys. This report, results and photos will be forwarded to organizations and posted on the web of the NZBSA and ACBS, Confederation of Cuesports. Our juniors are our future.
